When working with execs and non-security folks, we usually need to illustrate (and sometimes demonstrate) the risk of doing, or not doing, something.

But what is risk exactly?

I decided to ask ChatGPT to explain it to me like a five year old, commonly referred to as ELI5 (Explain-It Like I’m 5).

Here it is:

Risk management is a way of making sure that we don't get hurt or lose things that are important to us. It's like wearing a seatbelt when you're in the car, or wearing a helmet when you're riding your bike. These things help protect you in case something goes wrong.
In the same way, risk management helps protect us from things that might go wrong in other areas of our lives. For example, if you have a lot of money saved up and you want to make sure it doesn't disappear, you might put it in a bank where it's safe. That's a way of managing the risk of losing your money.
Risk management can also help us make good decisions. If you're thinking about doing something that might be dangerous, like climbing a really high mountain, you need to think about the risks involved and decide if it's worth it. If the risks are too high, you might decide not to do it.
So risk management is all about keeping ourselves and the things we care about safe and making smart decisions.
